We have 2 seasons in the Gulf. One is horrid with high humidity and temperatures and the other is awesome with cool breezes and bright sunshine. With very little rainfall in the area, you can often see the moon, shining bright sailing across the skies. Since we have at least 6-8 months of nice weather, a moon garden is a nice nook to design as part of your larger garden. A moon garden is a collection of plants that are seen in the dark and reflect the light of the moon.
This includes foliage that is light in color or almost silvery and flowers that are white or pastel in color. So, what can you plant in your moon garden? Pick a collection of perennials like jasmines and plumerias for all the year-round blooms and add seasonal varieties. Add flowers that are fragrant to enhance the beauty of your experience. Start with white plumerias and jasmine varieties. Add white petunias, kalanchoes, and honeysuckle to that. You can also add the very pale marigolds and the night-blooming cereus to enhance the experience. White hibiscus do well here 8 months a year and look gorgeous in the moonlight. For foliage varieties add the silvery tradescantia and Monstera Albo varieties to make your garden interesting. White star phlox can also be used. I would also add asparagus as they have fabulous white flowers when they bloom.
Make sure you have a nice seating area to enjoy all this, or you can plant this opposite your patio. Keep the lights dim so that the moonlight reflects off these plants but make sure you have safe pathways to walk around and enjoy your moon garden. Some pictures of suggested plants are attached.
